When and how to wash a pillow?

On average, each person keeps their head on a pillow for 3,000 hours a year. During these 8 hours of sleep, our bodies shed dead skin cells, hair, and body fluids. In order for the pillow to last as long as possible, it should be maintained and cleaned regularly. Did you know that a regular pillow gains about 30% weight in 2 years because it stores skin particles, dirt, dust mites, body fluids, and even beauty product residue? Different types of pillows have different lifespans: latex pillow 3-4 years, buckwheat pillow 3 years, feather pillow 18-36 months, memory foam pillow 18-36 months, polyester pillow 6-24 months. The lifespan depends on the filling material used, wear and tear on the surface, and maintenance. The lifespan of a SleepAngel pillow can be 5+ years, and this is purely because the surface of the pillow is easy to clean and not a single drop or particle can get inside the pillow.

How to extend the life of your pillow?

Every day when you make your bed, shake your pillow, it removes larger dust, dandruff and fluff and helps keep it in shape. When we sleep at night, we cannot regulate sweating, saliva flow, tears or, during the period of illness, runny nose, cough, sneezing. Face cream, balm, hairspray also seep through the pores and accumulate on the surface and inside the pillow, where the fat in the creams and balms goes rancid, in turn promoting the formation of bacteria. Finally, the pillow is teeming with various characters that we cannot see and so fungi, dust mites, viral bacteria and their colonies can live inside your pillow without your knowledge. Bed linen protects a little, but not completely and therefore it is important to wash bedding products as well, primarily the pillow, but also the duvet and mattress need care and cleaning once a quarter.

When should you wash your pillow?

Regular pillow care helps prevent unwanted build-up, unpleasant odors, and extends the life of the product. A clean pillow can prevent facial puffiness, morning congestion, puffy eyes, oily hair, and a scratchy throat.

Since the SleepAngel pillow is easy to maintain, it should be done every time you change your bed linen (once a week or two). Simply wipe the surface of the pillow with a clean damp cloth or put the pillow in the shower for a while. If necessary, you can also spray the pillow with disinfectant and pat it dry with a paper towel. The washing process tends to be longer with a regular pillow, but you should still find this time once a quarter. First, check the instructions to see if the pillow can be washed in the washing machine. It is recommended to wash two pillows at once so that the washing machine distributes the load more evenly. If it is allowed to dry the pillow in the dryer, we recommend doing this with two tennis balls so that the filling is distributed more evenly and does not stick together. Since SleepAngel pillows cannot be washed in the washing machine, we cannot share accurate and recommended information for washing other types of pillows, but we can say that it will take you one minute to wash our pillow, and unfortunately this is not the case with any other pillow.

If your pillow has turned yellow and smelly, it's time to wash it!

  • If the surface of the pillow is still yellow after washing - buy a new one.
  • If there are lumps and pieces inside your pillow - buy a new one.
  • If you sweat a lot, you need to consider heavier laundry and a shorter lifespan for your pillow.
  • If your pillow is flat and the filling is stuck together after drying it in the dryer, buy a new one.
  • If the surface of your SleepAngel pillow starts to crumble, you have either cared for it incorrectly or not cared for it enough, and for example, sweat or other intense dirt has made the protective layer brittle. Unfortunately, such a pillow no longer fulfills its protective and easily washable function - buy a new one.
  • If the surface of the SleepAngel pillow has turned yellow due to UV radiation or has changed color due to a dark pillowcase, the pillow is still fully functional. The polyurethane protective layer is not resistant to pigmentation, as it is a porous and breathable material. Coffee or red wine, if not washed off immediately, will also leave a stain and unfortunately cannot be removed.
