Good sleep comes with routine and peace

Sleep physician Tuuliki Hion on sleep and bedtime:
  • The normal time to fall asleep is half an hour. If you still can't sleep, it's better to get up than to lie down.
  • The simplest reason why sleep doesn't come is that the body isn't tired yet.
  • If you watch a big, bright TV screen in a white room before going to bed and check your smartphone for the latest messages in bed, your body needs even more time to calm down.
  • If sleep is not coming due to mild anxiety or stress, it is worth trying anything that could calm you down and take your mind off things: doing relaxation exercises, reading sheep, drinking herbal tea (but not green tea)
  • A routine helps - if you get used to going to bed at the same time every day, your body will learn it as a bedtime routine.
