Jaan Aru: Sleep works wonders

While it is commonly believed that miracle cures do not exist, brain scientist Jaan Aru recommends a simple trick that, according to him, will make everyone a healthier and better person.

“Today we think that sleep is for the weak, but in fact, sleep is a secret weapon and a panacea that makes you a better parent,” says Jaan Aru in a podcast for parents. Everyone needs enough sleep, whether they are an artist, athlete, car salesman, office worker, top manager or housewife. “Sleep is a natural panacea – it makes you feel better, makes parents more creative and flexible, improves memory, helps maintain weight and increases everyone’s productivity at work,” Aru lists. According to him, hundreds of scientific studies have convincingly shown that good sleep is the basis of good health, well-being and mental fitness.

According to Aru, good sleep is what helps us get the most out of life. “Only when we are well rested can we control and direct our brains enough to accomplish the things we want to achieve,” the scientist emphasizes. Both children and adults have to solve many different problems during the day and constantly learn new things. This tires the brain. When the brain gets tired, it can handle fewer and fewer things. Fortunately, both humans and animals have a very clever trick. “During sleep, the brain recovers and we are able to solve complex problems again,” the scientist says.
