SYNLAB donates computers and SleepAngel mattresses to nursing homes

Estonia's largest medical laboratory SYNLAB is donating tablets to nursing homes to help nursing home residents communicate with their loved ones. In addition, with the help of SYNLAB, safe and comfortable SleepAngel mattresses will reach nursing homes.

SYNLAB, which has been on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis for almost a year, decided to support Estonian nursing homes, whose residents and operations have been severely affected by the pandemic. SYNLAB contacted the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Social Insurance Board, with whose help a survey was conducted in nursing homes - what their elderly residents need most to feel better during the health crisis that has hit the whole world.

The survey revealed that during the visit restrictions in nursing homes, people miss their loved ones the most, with whom meetings have been difficult or impossible since the spring of last year. With the help of its IT partner Primend, SYNLAB purchased 115 tablets for Estonian nursing homes, equipped with the most common communication software. The tablets have special feet that allow people who cannot hold the screen to use the computer.

A survey of 192 nursing homes operating in Estonia also found that elderly people, who spend a lot of time in bed, need better mattresses. To meet this need, SYNLAB ordered 200 special mattresses from Estonian manufacturer SleepAngel that prevent bedsores and also reduce the maintenance burden on nursing home staff. The mattresses, which will be ready in March, will be distributed by ALD Automobile, one of SYNLAB's transport partners.

SYNLAB Service Manager Karin Kallikorm : “Working on the front lines of the crisis, we see every day who needs the most support. Nursing homes and special care institutions are certainly among them. While conducting the sentence tests, we have seen brave elderly people in nursing homes who are happy to be able to communicate with our samplers at least a little. Now that nursing homes have tablets, elderly people have the opportunity to reunite with their loved ones who cannot visit them during these difficult times. We hope that contact with loved ones will give them the strength to endure the crisis.”

Piret Pihel, head of Saaremaa Heart Home : "We are very pleased that we can, together with SYNLAB, help residents communicate with their loved ones. This is important for both parties. Residents feel that they are cared for, loved ones not only hear but can also see for themselves what the situation is like. An important added value for employees is that we receive training on how to use the boards and communication channels so that our residents' communication with their loved ones runs smoothly."

Aile Pilberg, Estonian representative of the SleepAngel brand: "Thank you for the opportunity to participate in SYNLAB's charity initiative. Care institutions and hospitals are our customers and we see how the coronavirus has affected them. We offered SYNLAB a solution: filtered sleep products produced in Estonia, which are a barrier to viruses, allergens, pathogens and fluids, and thus make the care home environment both more comfortable and safer. We added 27 free mattresses to the order so that the good deed would be greater together."

Primend Chairman of the Board Rene Kaalo: "When SYNLAB suggested to us to acquire easy-to-use but durable tablets for nursing homes, we immediately offered additional stands so that they could communicate with their loved ones when the tablet is in front of the bed. Our specialists have already set up Skype and Teams on the tablet and we are conducting training on how to use the tablet, using the stand and communication software. We hope that this will lead to many happy reunions this coming weekend."

Mārcis Maurinš, CEO of ALD Automotive Baltics: “When SYNLAB called ALD and presented the plan made with great heart, the decision to help came very quickly. We are happy to organize the necessary transport and help the mattresses reach nursing homes across Estonia. In addition, several ALD employees volunteered to be drivers to deliver the mattresses if necessary. We are proud to have a client like SYNLAB.”

SYNLAB is the largest medical laboratory in Estonia and a partner of the Health Board in coronavirus testing, together with Medicum and several other private medical companies and hospitals.

In Estonia, SYNLAB performs over 8.5 million laboratory tests per year. Over 400 people work in SYNLAB's laboratories and blood collection points.
